'Packed in like sardines’ is an understatement, as an excitable and jovial Friday night crowd jostle for position on the dancefloor of Corsica Studios’ undersized main room. But they get on with it regardless. The odd elbow in the face is a small price to pay when UK contemporary disco darlings Crazy P are on full live show duties for the first time in the capital for over two years. And it’s clear they’ve lost none of their groove.
It’s been three years since their ‘Stop Space Return’ album dropped, and the band’s main protagonists have hardly been quiet during that time with producers Jim Baron and Chris ‘Hot Toddy’ Todd releasing some quality remix and production work, and lead singer Danielle Moore lending her tantalising vocals to some top producers’ tracks. But tonight the band are back together on stage to launch their stunning fifth studio album ‘When We On’ (out on 2020 Vision, once again) and there’s no signs of rust or nerves as they get down to business.
For over an hour Crazy P treat the crowd in the sauna-like rave-box to a mash-up of classic tunes like ‘Lie Lost’ and ‘Never Gonna Reach Me’, plus sizzling hot new material, the highlights being ‘Open For Service’, Future Beat’ and the epic ‘Wecanonlybewhoweare’. The band’s momentum transmits to the elated punters, who one minute are singing along lustily, the next getting busy in full boogie-rave mode.
All the time, leading from the front, is the ever-glamorous Danielle. Pacing the stage with boundless energy, she really brings the glitz while captivating the crowd with her ballsy and accomplished vocals.
Given the current disco renaissance, this long serving-band are very well placed for success with both the album and show – and their own unique brand of dancefloor craziness.
