Following his decent solo album last year, Instra:mental’s Damon Kirkham continues his pursuit of neo-romantic techno by bringing Alex Smoke over to his Convex Industries fold. Adopting the moniker of Wraetlic, the Glaswegian delivers 11 desolate tracks that reflect on society’s failings and his personal anguish on lover’s rock. The utterly desolate results sit somewhere between Depeche Mode’s early-90s descent into lost faith, Art Department’s jilted stylings and Boards Of Canada’s ‘Geogaddi’. A Scuba remix under his SCB alias provides a late surge of euphoric fight, but this is a largely dejected and sombre affair that is perhaps only for those of a darker disposition.
