Now here’s a thing: a synth-swamped compilation for beginners that somehow manages to join the dots from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Doctor Who theme and The Normal’s moody synth-
glam stomper ‘Warm Leatherette’ to Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’, then steps gleefully up to ’88 rave HQ with Inner City’s ‘Big Fun’ and takes in Daft Punk, Adam F, Goldfrapp and Gorillaz before coming to a closing peak with Swedish House Mafia’s One (2010). With sleeve notes by Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware and cheap at twice the price, it’s insightful but not crashingly obvious. And any comp that includes ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ is all right with us.
