Over 17 years, Roots Manuva has become one of the UK’s most enduring acts. He’s produced four wide-ranging, lyrically intense albums (and three acclaimed ‘remix’ versions), but ‘4everevolution’ might be his best yet. Produced by Roots himself – with some added Toddla T, among others – there’s twisted dub-hop (‘Here We Go Again’), straight-up rap (‘Skid Valley’), rumbling ragga skanks (‘Who Goes There?’) and, in ‘The Throes Of It’, an epic, rock-dancehall hybrid. From its floor-wobbling riddims to Roots’s extraordinary baritone, this is a captivating album, with bass at its heart.
