There are few better producers around than Paul Woolford, but the fourth The Lab outing reminds us that the one-time Basics resident is an outstanding DJ too. There’s nothing frilly here – it’s no ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’-style collection of underground hits (though there are some) or showy parade of robotic mixing. Instead, over two CDs, Paul goes in search of the groove with a variety of weapons strapped to his belt. There are old faves (Chez Damier’s deep house standard, ‘Untitled’), recent gems (Roman Fluegel’s waspish Latin techno storm ‘The Improvisor’) and current dancefloor weapons (the malevolent bass/techno crossover of Untold’s ‘Motion The Dance’). The result is a classic mix in the making.
