The fifth LP of pastoral-leaning electronica from Bristolian producer David Edwards is his most ambitious yet, making use of a full studio on ‘Orchard’ to augment his home studio set-up. Live drums beef up the 8-bit jazz of ‘Ocean Swell’, while bass, xylophones, pianos, woodwind and strings meld with their synth counterparts. This marriage of electronic and acoustic could well be Edwards finally accepting the ‘folktronica’ tag he used to hate. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is some hey-nonny-nonny take on electronica; ‘Through The Pupils Of Goats’ studs its symphonic trip-hop with bubbly disco and Italo references, while ‘Lending Library’ hop-scotches between d’n’b, AOR and frantic, organic techno-style builds.
