Michael Mayer’s solo productions have arguably been overshadowed by his label curation for Kompakt, legendary DJ sets and era-defining compilations. ‘Mantasy’, inspired by his penchant for obscure soundtracks, consists of 10 previously unreleased tracks of varying tempo. A dreamlike soundscape acts as the early setting before the jaunty electronica and techno crescendos of title track ‘Voight Kampff Test’, and ‘Neue Furche’. Having confessed to making his debut album in a matter of weeks, ‘Mantasy’ is a more immersive opus than its predecessor. Whether its impish character makes for a consistently engrossing listening experience is questionable, but it has moments of brilliance.
