We didn’t get this album at first. Its gloss was offputting, the slightly earnest pop-rock vocals, huge trance chords and straight-up rap tunes seemingly a million miles from Joker’s long run of grimey, synth-riffing dancefloor 12”s. But then we turned up the volume. Ramp it up and you hear mad sci-fi ambition and invention, huge swathes of Prince, Daft Punk and Timbaland, and dirty synth-funk madness, and you realise classics like ‘Tron’, included here, were always reaching for this kind of gloss. It’s not 100 per cent coherent, but especially if you get the bonus instrumental disc you’ll find proof of an important talent spreading his wings.
