A release on Permanent Vacation is a release bound for the Mixmag stereo, but this debut from John Talabot struggled to raise so much as an eyebrow in our office. ‘Fin’ comes with on-trend nu disco and slo-mo house credentials, but that’s actually its downfall. There’s no distinct personality to be heard, or the kind of dynamic ideas that could give it the ability to totally dominate a room. That said, Barcelona-based Talabot certainly can hit sublime heights. Tracks like ‘Oro/Y/Sangre’ and ‘Missing/You’ feature the kind of mesmeric rhythms and lush melodies that deep cosmic dreams are made of – but his previous releases like ‘Matilda’s Dream’ and ‘Naomi’ had much more bite.
