Joe And Will Ask? are Ministry residents, and it’s easy to see why. Their electro-inflected techno treads a line between credible and commercial, with enough on this debut album to keep both camps happy. Opener ‘Freya’ combines a melodic trance keyboard line with a bang on-trend bouncing bassline, before ‘Goat Race’ takes the trance influence up a notch with a melody that has all the commercial appeal of an Avicii production. The populist vibe lets up a little as it reaches its mid-point, giving way to Scuba-esque basslines as tough as the Norse explorers the album’s named after. The duo may have some work to do on defining and refining their sound, but like the Vikings they’re so keen on, they may one day conquer.
