‘Double Cup’ is a career-defining album for Chicago’s DJ Rashad. You could feel it coming; it’s out via Hyperdub, the label on which he’s recently released some of his most imaginative material.

Lead-up EPs ‘Rollin’’ and ‘I Don’t Give A Fuck’ saw the footwork pioneer open up his sound to jungle’s scattershot hype, smooth edges of r’n’b and dollops of straight-up oddness.

‘Double Cup’ broadens his scope even further, and the forms conjured from his percussive, loop-heavy style are exhilarating. The production is bolder than before and full of little intricacies, ensuring the album never wanes; there’s footwork based on deep, soulful sensuousness and hip hop wooze as well as face-melters, making this the finest, most engaging example of footwork we’ve heard yet.
