As his beautiful but sinister remix of Herbert’s ‘It’s Only’ showed, German house producer Stefan Kozalla is a master of mood and texture. The guest list on ‘Amygdala’ proves his pull, boasting marquee names to help Koze construct a dense, intense and highly individual album of nuanced house. Caribou lends vocals to the shuffling, glitchy ‘Track ID Anyone?’, Apparat croons in sub-Thom Yorke fashion atop the wheezing micro-house rhythm of ‘Nices Wölkchen’ and Matthew Dear even gets in on the act, adding odd, croaking tones to ‘Magical Boy’s floaty, organic house. As well as woodblocks and shakers, Koze plays a mouth harp. Surely a first for Mixmag, and proof, if needed, of Koze’s singularity – and chutzpah.
