A couple of years back, an EP of experimental, lo-fi, beats-driven electronica called ‘High Beam’ was released by a shadowy act named after video director Hype Williams. Since then, three albums have come and gone, and now the duo behind the project are on Hyperdub as Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland. And it’s a beautiful, haunting and exotic debut: challenging in places, but also utterly addictive and fun. All but one track is numbered, so head to ‘5’ for some slo-mo, Oriental, psychedelic rave and ‘10’ for a squelchy, narcotic analogue funk jam session, with Inga’s ethereal voice for company. ‘Black Is Beautiful’ is nigh-on indescribable – in a very good way.
