Will Saul’s Close moniker was originally designed for anonymous, pop-leaning output, but with his cover long blown comes a full album. The pick from a host of collaborations, Charlene Soraia appears on the stirring album opener, and then later with Scuba on the equally engaging single ‘Beam Me Up’. Elsewhere, this guest-heavy formula doesn’t always work quite so well, with Tikiman and Appleblim combining on a disappointing roots tune and Fink lending vocals to the naval-gazing ‘Wallflower’. Thankfully, Tanner Ross, Slow Hands and Fat Freddy’s Drop frontman Joe Dukie generate better results on the spectacular ‘My Way’. And while it’s hard not to view the five solo instrumentals as some of the strongest work here, overall ‘Getting Closer’ is well worth some private investigating.
