As a pop and hip hop producer, Diplo has forged a career on sticking one finger up to convention; he’s outspoken, innovative and controversial. So it’s no surprise that artists on his Mad Decent label are far from run of the mill. Take Bosco Delrey, a bequiffed purveyor of electronic rockabilly. Think rock ’n’ roll legend Eddie Cochran hooking a drum machine up to his Gretsch guitar. ‘Everybody Wah’ works best when Delrey veers away from the rock script, like on ‘Afterlife’, where a gentle dance-hall riddim, plucked strings and spooky keys spiral in and out. Even better is ‘Cool Out’ which sees Delrey delivering a sneering vocal over the Amen break ramped up to warpneck speed. An oddity, sure: but a fun one.
