He may resemble a Nathan Barley character, but Dev Hynes, AKA Light-speed Champion and ex of bolshy electro-rockers Test Icicles, always delivers crafted music. His NYC-based Blood Orange project continues this with some of the most lovingly polished production imaginable. It’s very hipster-ish – you’ll hear echoes of The XX, Friendly Fires, Vampire Weekend and more in its sleek night-time narratives. But there’s a unique atmosphere to its combination of intimacy and epic spaghetti western elements that mean that behind its cool countenance, this album has a heart.
