Waka Flocka Flame, the Atlanta-based rapper who scored hits with songs like 'O Let’s Do It' and 'No Hands', revealed that he’s working on a new album that will have a strong 'EDM' influence.
Waka unveiled his plans during a recent interview with the website Hip-Hop DX. He says: “‘Club jumpin’ like I’m Skrillex, get ‘em Diplo...’ The King of Rap EDM is me. I’ve been there. Punk rap, that’s EDM. People didn’t understand what I was saying, now they do. I see a lot of my students, I’m like the principal, I’m here to talk."
When asked further about his plans with 'EDM rap' Waka said that he was already working with several DJs and producers in the dance music scene, naming Skrillex, Flosstradamus and Diplo as confirmed collaborators, along with “some underground people too.”
In the interview Waka also talks about his experience at this year’s SXSW, which appears to have been the motivating factor in his recent decision to expand his musical horizons, name-checking the trendy trap music scene in the process.
“The Southby experience, it was all EDM...trap music. I went down there only for the ultra. That shit was crazy,” he said.
Flame doesn’t make it clear if it’s his next album, 'Flockaveli 2', due out October 5, is the EDM album in question, or if it’s a future project. When asked about his next record specifically, the only hints he gave about it’s sound was that it’s hard: “That shit hard. It’s hard. It’s haaaaard.”
