Speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival last week, Moby said that combining dance music and drugs makes for “a really nice time.” It’s not exactly a groundbreaking statement but there’s more to it than that.
The ultra-creative electronic DJ said that while drugs make up a “huge part” of dance music, to achieve euphoria you need a massive crowd, “phenomenally produced dance music”, incredible light shows and ecstasy. For Moby at least, there’s a time and a place.
Drugs have been part of the king of techno’s life from its very beginning. In an interview with The New York Times last year, Moby revealed that his earliest memory was being left in daycare while his mum went to take drugs with friends.
Until a few years ago, Moby was battling alcoholism and “soul-destroying hangovers”. After one 4am finish he woke up to find three strangers smoking crack in his bathroom.
Often thought of as a soya milk fan and dedicated vegetarian, these revelations about his lifestyle came as a surprise to many. Moby’s been sober for a number of years now and has recently gained additional recognition from his LA architecture blog.
