Bassnectar reckons metal's influence on dubstep is just "natural progression".
In a recent interview the US dubstepper compared the 140bpm sound to extreme forms of guitar music, saying: "Death metal is all about intensity, frequencies, volumes and tempos, using the approach that you play your instrument as intensely as possible."
Bassnectar comes from a metal background, which explains his use of gigantic riffs and rib-snapping distortion. He has this in common with other US dubstep luminaries such as Skrillex, who put a gnarly twist on the sound. Members of legendary metal bands Korn and Sepultura have also been making dubstep, which means the future of the genre is likely to be a very noisy one.
