A user generated image posted online over the weekend shows that top DJs including David Guetta, Avicii and Skrillex count Mexico City as the city in which they are 'most popular' on Facebook – and questions the legitimacy of the number of real fans they have on the social network site.
The image, which can be seen here, is made up of screen grabs from a number of artist profile pages. On all of the profile pages, Mexico City is listed as the artist's 'most popular city'.
The artists – David Guetta, Avicii, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Excision and Steve Aoki – could all to be highly popular in Mexico City, but the graphic makes the claim that the fans have been paid for.
Of course, this could all be a conspiracy theory. Dance music is very big in Mexico, which is home to the huge BPM Festival. Mexico City also has a massive population and relatively well developed IT infrastructure, meaning lots of people online. But even if this particular graphic is nonsense (which, let's face it, wouldn't be a first for the internet) there is no doubt something fishy going on somewhere in the industry, considering sites like Bulk Fans, Likes And Followers and Increase Likes all offer 'likes' packages at relatively cheap rates. So even if it's not the top tier of artists, somebody must me doing it.
