TRENDS OF THE YEAR: GRIME HIT THE FLOOR

It’s been on the cards or a while. Ever since grime veteran Terror Danjah hooked up with Planet Mu and Hyperdub, and young Rinse FM DJ team Elijah and Skilliam founded Butterz, the scene’s beat-makers have been emerging from the shadows. And 2011 was the year that instrumental grime took its place as walloping dancefloor music just as innovative as dubstep, and as hip-swinging as its young cousin, UK funky.

Youngsters like Mr Mitch and Swindle added buzzing funk hooks not a million miles from Daft Punk, while the likes of Teddy, Spooky, J Beatz, Rude Kid and many more kept it rough and tough. Contrary to stereotype, it’s not just “a London ting”, with Midlanders like TRC, S-X and Preditah, south coast producers Moony and Royal T, and even Glaswegian Taz and Finland’s Gremino all tapping into the possibilities grime provides. Download the set from the Butters vs Hardrive rave at Cable, or Swindle at the Big Chill 2011, and revel in their barmy energy.
