Croatian house don Solomun on his remix of Noir & Haze's 'Around'
How did the remix begin?
I got a request from Noir at the beginning of this year but I was really busy with some other projects so I had to shelve it for a few months. Then I forgot about the track until May, when I hit a run in the studio of being really frustrated. When I was listened back to Noir’s track, it was like a liberation for me. I knew what I had to do and had the track eighty per cent finished in my brain already. I have never had this kind of inspiration so fast.
How did you make the track?
I started with a few ideas and just knew, very quickly, which direction to take. The inspiration was a gift! I brought the vocals together as one part, not disjointed like in the original. I also slowed it down to 115bpm. The vocals are so sexy, and they needed a slow carpet-beat with a warm bassline. I used the Prophet 08 module for the bassline, and the harmony of the bassline was the basis for the pads also which I made with the Surge synth plug-in (right). It was all meant to have a kind of pop arrangement. I didn’t want any ‘boring’ moments and I finished it in about four hours.
Any tips on remixing?
Accept only vocal tracks! Also remember that the bassline is the most important thing for almost every track. The bassline carries the atmosphere, and if you’ve got a bassline you’re happy with you’re laying the right foundations and are half-way to finishing the remix.
