The brand set out to work with local artists on producing short runs of exclusive garments

Since being founded in 2010, SCRT has become an established contender in the UK streetwear scene, creating forward-thinking garments and collaborating with creatives globally.

The brand's current range offers a selection of cut and sew shirts, bags, hats, jackets and accessories that are influenced by music, street art, tattoos, and skate culture. To find out more about the brand we decided to catch up with SCRT director Adam Kirk...

What initially inspired you to start SCRT?

We started in 2010 out of frustration with what was available; if you could find a brand you liked, everyone was wearing it and nothing really felt genuine. At the same time, a few artist friends of ours weren't being treated fairly by brands they were working with, and we felt like big brands didn't care about quality. These things were really important to us and it all started from there.

How does SCRT set itself apart from other streetwear brands?

I think our focus on artist collaborations really helps, but really it's about the attention to detail and quality of the product. There are loads of brands out there, and a lot are either incredibly high-end, which isn't really what streetwear's about, or they take no pride in their product.

We like to say we believe in bold design and subtle detailing, and looking at our work I think that comes across. For example our Oxford shirts; we spent ages finding the perfect wooden buttons to go with each material, making sure that it feels right on your skin and that the shirt holds its shape - a lot of work goes into each design, and combining that with our artist collaborations results in a really unique brand.

Was it a challenge to get the brand off the ground?

Absolutely, we started with a concept and just enough money to print a few t-shirts; getting that to market was a challenge in itself and we had to prove ourselves time and time again before we were able to make that leap into cut and sew and all the potential pitfalls it holds. We're constantly learning though, and there's always something we can add to the collection, this part of the game feels a lot more rewarding when you see see people choosing to wear SCRT.

The brand is centered around artists and musicians, which artists have you collaborated with so far?

Currently our collection features work from Brandon Celi, Kevin Lucbert, Harrison Park, Lewis Stringer, and long-time collaborator Iain Macarthur.

Are there any artists or musicians you'd like to work with in future?

We're already working with a few artists we've been talking about for ages, but our aim has always been to celebrate upcoming artists rather than work with those already doing well. I think one thing we'd really like to do is expand what we're doing into different media, maybe start collaborating with musicians or looking at different ways we can bring art into our design.

Finally, do you have any advice for up-and-coming brands looking to establish themselves in the scene?

Do your research, but do your own thing - there's already so much going on in streetwear if you're the same as everyone else you won't be doing yourself any favours.
