When listening to Matthewdavid, it’s best to retune to another mental frequency and sync your mind with the LA-based producer’s. “The Guide is you. The Glide is life. Be yourself, live fully,” he explains here in New Age-like fashion. His new LP ‘Trust The Guide...’ can be overwhelming, with wave after wave of dubby, washed-out ambient swells rolling across the record. At times, they make beauty out of discordance (see the coruscating reverb and mechanoid drone of ‘Venusian Sunset)’; at others, twinkling melodies scuttle in and out of grand chords, as on ‘Dune Enigma’. Matthewdavid’s heading somewhere far, far away. Maybe he knows something we don’t.
