An introduction to the wonderfully colourful bass music made by Murlo

Guide: Murlo

Murlo specialises in a wonderfully colourful kind of bass-heavy dance music and he's finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Already this year he's put out one of the best grime tunes of 2014, landed a mini-residency on BBC 1Xtra and become a strong affiliate of the Boxed and Butterz camps.

A few years back he moved to London from Brighton in order to concentrate on music and the step into the capital is now paying off. He recently quit his day job in order to hit production and DJing full time, a move he's been able to make thanks to becoming ubiquitous on the UK scene for his ultra defined sound. He taps into the whomp 'n' grind of grime, garage and bassline as well as the hot thrust of dancehall and afrobeats to create riddims that shimmy and shake with carnival energy and low-end heat. Put simply, you'll know a Murlo tune when you hear it and he's forging ahead with his own insatiable style.

He must be one of the hardest working producers on the UK underground, having notched up releases on Unknown To The Unknown, Glacial Sound and Mixpak and hustled hard with shows up and down the country and a longtime residency at quality London party Hipsters Don't Dance.

His first mention in Mixmag came in late 2012 when we noted his "mutant dancehall, hyper soca and tropical house" and since then he's whittled his productions to fit the 140bpm bracket and has become a key fixture in the new wave of grime producers bubbling up in 2014.

"I mainly just love the process of making music and visuals," he tells us. "Once I'm done with a tune and it's bounced out and just sitting there I want to jump right back in and start on a new idea." A keen graphic designer, he paired his refix of TRC's 'You & Me' with a lush video and also created a custom illustration for this feature. A restless approach to art means there's plenty more to come from Murlo. We're so glad he quit the day job.
