MIX OF THE WEEK: V.I.V.E.K

Who? V.I.V.E.K, London-based dubstep DJ/producer keeping the true nature of the genre alive.

Why? He's dedicated to the original dubstep vibe: oceanic sub-bass, parties akin to tribal gatherings, stacks of dubplates, soundsystems that have the power to rattle teeth and snap ribs. Raised on Mala's Deep Medi label between 2009 and 2012 (a period which saw the release of behemoth cuts like 'Feel It' and 'Out Of Reach'), V.I.V.E.K has since struck out with his own club night and label, both called System. Located at The Dome in North London, System is a haven for heads who like their dubstep deep, percussive and shrouded in the thick fug of ganja smoke, while the label has just released its first 12", featuring an electric new riddim from V.I.V.E.K himself. As certain areas of dubstep have blown way out of proportion or fallen into a state of stagnation, the West London native champions 140bpm music that still sounds revolutionary.

The atmosphere at System blew us away when we first visited last year and the party went on to be named one of our Clubs Of The Year at the end of 2012. The debut release on the System label also recently scored Tune Of The Month in the magazine, so we thought it high time to call V.I.V.E.K in for an exclusive mix. It includes his love of suspense and meditation, power-surge bass and intricate drumming. This is dubstep at its finest. Enjoy the ride...
