It’s nearly time for Ibiza to slip into closing party mode. But not quite yet. Thankfully, life on the White Isle is still romping along at a steady pace, with many of the bigger club-nights choosing to add extra dates to their already elongated calendar listings.
Last week, for example, Sasha’s Never Say Never bash at Ushuaia boasted one of its strongest line-ups of the season, with DJ Sneak, Tensnake, and M.A.N.D.Y.’s Patrick Bodem booked to perform on the giant arced stage.
To our surprise, after resident Dimitri Nakov had finished warming up the al-fresco crowd, DJ Sneak stormed into the DJ booth and grabbed hold of the main sonic levers. It was quite a surprise to see the self-proclaimed House Gangster on stage at 7pm. However, Sneak’s early emergence turned out to be a wise move, because his bouncy, upfront chugging rhythms worked as dance-floor bait, enticing the crowds that were flooding through the turnstiles to head straight toward the dance-floor and get involved.
An hour or so later, Sneak passed the musical baton to Tensnake, who immediately set about altering the tempo to a slower, disco pitched pace. As the sun began to fall away behind the high and mighty hotel walls, rays of cosmic house music began sweeping across the cobalt blue swimming pool, with ‘Coma Cat’ and ‘Around The House’ remixed and reworked on the fly.
Patrick Bodem was next on the Ushuaia stage, promoting more melody, although his beats were tougher and his bass-lines darker and gruffer than anything that had come before. Then it was time for Sasha to make his entrance, appearing to a roaring Birthday welcome from the packed dance-floor below him.
Sasha quickly had the crowd jumping to his own remix of ‘Flutes’ by Hot Chip, while his stunning, shimmering re-edit of ‘All That Matters’ by Kolsch was almost too emotive for us to handle.
Nevertheless, the tune of the night was ‘Sirens’ by Daniel Dexter, which sang out across the darkened skyline like some kind of hedonistic alarm bell, warning all those of us who cared to listen that there is now only one month of the 2012 Ibiza summer dance season left remaining.
