There are always plenty of secret(ish) free-parties staged here in Ibiza over the course of the summer season, but the most celebrated free-party of them all is always the annual Freddie Mercury Birthday shindig, staged at Pikes Hotel, the legendary 80s A-list retreat where Hotel Tropicana was filmed. In recent years, the Ibiza Rocks team have been asked-in to tender Pikes a new and much needed lick of paint, but happily the uniqueness of the hedonistic hostelry hasn’t been smothered beneath the new tint. The show, thankfully, continues in much the same vein as it did before, with Tony Pikes still resident onsite in something of a roaming Godfather capacity.
To gain entrance to last weekends Mercury party, visiting party heads, both male and female, had to display a moustache on their top lip. Anyone not sporting a furry handlebar had to have one drawn on at the door by the Pikes crew. Despite reports that he’d been cultivating a generous mustachio especially for the gig, Ibiza Rocks resident Colin Peters took to the DJ dias wearing a hairy replica. Tiga, too, was clean shaven, but he didn’t seem to fancy the thought of wearing a hirsute mask. Which prompted the crowd to call for him to reattach his moustache immediately, but when the Canadian dropped the new DJ Hell remix of N.E.R.D. ‘Let Me Hypnotized You’ the audience quickly forgot what the trouble was.
2manydjs came next, commencing their set with a techy remix of Madonna’s ‘Into the Groove’, followed by an enhanced mix of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’. Then, unexpectedly, the al fresco romp was interrupted by a couple of local law enforcement officials who appeared to inspect the fuss. Suddenly we all felt ‘Under Pressure’. However, the boys in blue didn’t stick around for long, after all, there’s nothing disturbing about a man sporting a thick moustache… but when you catch sight of hundreds of moustachioed girls dressed in killer heels it makes sense to retreat back to base for further training.
