REVIEW: AMNESIA OPENING PARTY

This summer, Amnesia was the last of the big Ibiza super-clubs to unlock its doors. But in this case, last was certainly not least, because Saturday night’s Opening Party in San Rafael was as impressive as any other event that has been staged on the island so far this season.

Sander Kleinenberg headlined the Main Room, with Reboot topping the bill on the Terrace. But it was the atmosphere inside the venue that made the event extra special. Right from the outset, the crowd were locked in to a full-on party groove. The vibe was dark and mischievous, but genuinely friendly. There were times when the atmosphere inside Amnesia felt almost tangible, as if the force fuelling the minds of more than 5,000 educated clubbers could be collected with outstretched arms.

As night turned to day, golden sunbeams began bursting through the ceiling into the Terrace room. The daylight appeared brighter and more dazzling than any of the white lasers that had enlightened the dark, stomping nighttime hours, and the energy of the new dawn worked to reanimate a committed but tiring crowd who had been stomping for eight hours straight.

With midday fast approaching, Davide Squillace and Matthias Tanzmann appeared on-stage to wrap things up. Their back-to-back performance was the prize offering of the night – a brash, classy fusion of heavy house bass-lines and futuristic vocal samples.

Even out side, their set continued like a favourite tape cassette that has had the majority of its major cords warped and twisted from overuse, but that is still prepared to offer-up a faint, half-amnesic memory of something very, very special.
