Subtitled, somewhat un-elegantly, ‘Industrial, Post Punk, EBM: Classics & Rarities ’80–’88’, this double CD from Trevor ‘Underdog’ Jackson of Playgroup fame is a brilliant, eye-opening dive into 80s electronic music, focusing on its more leftfield, rock-ish sounds. Much of it – take Hard Corps’ squelching ‘Je Suis Passée’ and Severed Heads’ jaw-dropping ‘Dead Eyes Opened’ – sounds like it could have been made last week, perhaps an indicator that with the likes of LCD, Hot Chip and Gang Gang Dance embracing analogue synths, we’ve turned full circle. Like all the best compilations, ‘Metal Dance’ leads you off on tangents in pursuit of more from the artists you’ve heard.
