10 eye-wateringly expensive pairs of headphones
Audiophiles assemble
Sennheiser unveiled the brand new Orpheus headphones this week, with the price clocking in at a staggering €50,000 Euros.
If you thought headphones costing the price of a car are a rarity though, guess again. This latest pair from Sennheiser aren't even the most expensive designs going, not by a long shot.
Check out some of the most pricey cans ever below.
1 Diamond encrusted Beats by Dre
How much £650,000
The most ostentatious headphones going. As worn by LMFAO at the Superbowl and Lil Wayne courtside at the NBA All-Star Game in 2012, these cans encrusted with 114 carats of Graff Diamonds are valued at a tidy $1 million dollars.
2 SuperBeats by Dre
How much £16,249
Dre again. He seems to have a thing for customising his headphone designs to ludicrous expense. Maybe he should have ploughed some of that money into the sound quality? These ones, decorated with diamonds and engraved gold, were sent to every participant of the 2014 Superbowl.
3 Dolce & Gabana Green Embroidered Nappa Leather Headphones with Fox Fur Trim
How much £5,200
Ever put on your headphones and feel like they lacked a fox fur trim? If so, these are the ones for you,
Paris Hilton.
4 Abyss AB-1266
How much £4,254
This pair from Abyss are dubbed by some as the finest headphones money can buy. If you don't have the capital lying around to make the purchase then no problem, they're available on 24-month 0% finance packages. Debt's never sounded so good.
5 Stax SR-009
How much £3,695
One website selling pairs of the Stax SR-009 listed the silver plated, high purity copper wire as being "Audiophile Grade". We're glad there's wire experts qualifying this.
6 Sennheiser HD800
How much £2,529
From the same company as the Orpheus headphones, the HD800 from Sennheiser are a snip at only £2.5k. Sure the design looks like you're walking around with two flying saucers straddling your ears, but we're sure the sound's decent.
7 Grado PS1000
How much £1,699
Grado's magnum opus, streamlined and designed by engineers with decades of knowledge and experience. These are no-frills headphones with the emphasis entirely on sound quality, as you can probably tell from the lack of aesthetic pleasure.
8 Audeze LCD-3
How much £1,599
These headphones are expressly vegan, swapping leather for Zebrawood on the stylish cups. Expect them to become standard issue at psytrance raves.
9 Ultrasone Edition 10
How much £1,675
Inspired by the wings of a butterfly, these headphones incorporate precious Ethiopian sheep skin, ruthenium metal and Zebrano wood into the classy design. It's like wearing an antique on your head.
10 Ultimate Ears Personal Reference Monitors
How much £1,299
Look at how small and flimsy these look! Regardless of sound quality, we can't believe anyone would drop over a grand on something they could conceivably break whilst sitting down on their back pocket.
