Electro house

It's currently dominating dancefloors and download charts everywhere. So is it the hottest sound in dance music right now? Or is there too much quantity and not enough quality?

Electro house debate

The thing that annoys me is the amount of shoddy electro house remixes/cover versions kicking about. I went to a party recently (granted it was in Goa, not known for its understated, quality dance music) and every other tune was a clunky re hash of an old song. Tainted Love, Right Here, Right Now even Long Train Running! Too much cashing in and not enough thought or innovation methinks.

It annoys me too....

As a writer and producer of Electro, it does annoy me when I hear tracks getting club or airplay which sound like they've been written just to cash in.
One of the tracks (Bump and Grind) on my current EP contains vocals that some people are comparing to Miss Perfect's, but in my track the vocals are telling a story about a girl who sees someone she fancies on a dancefloor.

I suppose it's inevitable that there will be comparisons and copycats, but there are still some of us out there who look to write our own thing because we want to, not because we feel we have to.

AYE

I agree but there is lot of shite in every genre, but there always has been, beign able to find and pick the tunes which are gems is the challenge

biglockie | Thu, 07/02/2008 - 12:53

i can't stand that annoying

i can't stand that annoying singer (dont know her name) that seems to do the same thing on every single electro house track in the charts! i.e. that bodyrox track. i feel it would only be polite if she was shot!

Electro house corrupted by hard dance

The game was up when all the hard dance chavs jumped ship and started claiming they were all "electro" DJs. That's why the genre is now filled with witless, semi-boshing nonsense.

haha Agreed!

Every genre has the same problems

There's shit drum n bass, shit breaks, shit techno - its mining for the gems that's the fun bit of being a music lover. Like supporting your home team, you have to deal with the losses to enjoy the wins.

Electro is the genre de jour because it combines a sense of excitement, immediacy, nowness at a BPM that isnt quite aerobic meaning you can dance sexy not sweaty.

i think it wont be too long

i think it wont be too long before the real gash electro sound fades off, there is alot of fantastic stuff coming through already for 2008, so i think the shite will filter out by the summer (fingers crossed)

Looking on the bright side...

... this is what usually prompts a scene to innovate. The same thing's happened to countless genres; they get popular, they get more accessible, people cash in and the scene stalwarts feel a bit betrayed. But that's when the creativity moves on elsewhere... so what do you think is next, that's the big question?!

Melissa Harrison | Thu, 21/02/2008 - 13:46

it has...

no soul!

Just avoid MTV...

just don't make the mistake I made a few weeks ago, when I was reaching new levels of boredom, of flicking through the endless crap music channels on Sky. All I found were tinny sounding rehashes of stuff we once thought of as 'cutting edge'... one of which, had taken something similar to Medhi's strings in Signatune and tarnished it with vocals we normally associate with 2Unlimited. These pop/electro hybrids will last as long as a bowl of pedrigree chum does in front of the face of a pit ball terrier.

Just keep delving deeper..

Adverb | Thu, 21/02/2008 - 17:00

those strings are from a

those strings are from a really old track, so technically Mehdi was rehashing an old track BUT he made it sound exciting and different from the original. this new version just took his idea and ran with it and turned it into the same vocal crap thats everywhere. im an electro DJ and want to shoot myself after the 8th time of someone asking for 'that new bodyrox song'.
