im a first timer n my mate has offered me vinyl decks for £50, these are straigtforward beginner ones, which would be alright for me. Obviously aint got no vinyl but it don't bother me to go out n raid the vinyl stores in london.....or do i buy a half decent CD pair n mixer for a couple of hundred...im thinking the vinyls... Advice would be much appreciated!!

Vinyl is on it's way out
Vinyl is on it's way out except as a controller medium for mp3 systems like Traktor. CD decks will be around for a while still, but only since you can burn tracks to them. No matter how cheap the vinyl decks are, don't invest in them b/c you will be replacing them sooner than you think.
LET ME TELL U
4 WORDS U ARE A TWAT
6 of one half dozen of the other
ok, arguably what the chap above says is sorts of right.
its harder getting some tunes on vinyl now HOWEVER, if you are just starting off and want to get practice in then chances are you can buy 2nd hand vinyl for next to nothing and actually learn how to master beat matching!
all DJ's who start on CDJ's cant play vinyl becuase its actually a skilled talent to aquire.
A monkey can mix on CDJ's its mastering the FX on the CDJ's that splits the wannabees from the actual DeeJay!
Personally I wouldnt run before u can walk, I'd invest in some 12 10s (not cheap ones) as u can get those for next to nothing now - get some vinyl off ebay or in vinyl exchange (to get ur started)
and start practicing... it will be a while before u contemplate CDJ's and personally u have one up on all the DJ's who mix CDJ's as u will be able to play both!
I have utmost respect for the vinyl DJ as there a dying breed (also Sven vath, Danny howells they all mix on vinyl!! so it cant be that out dated)
Cheers for the advice, they
Cheers for the advice, they have both helped me, very good views cheers people
CD vs Vinyl
I used to use Denon 2000f mk1 back in 1994 - the first twin cd decks...! Upgraded evey year to the next model, depending upon the club I would be deejaying at, at the time...
Stopped using vinyl really in 1997, as the quality of it that the tunes were pressed on at that time was poor, substandard quality. They used to feel like the old flexi discs you used to get as freebies on the front of Look In!!
Go for Cd's everythings
Go for Cd's everythings downloadable these days and its a cheaper way of doing things in the long run.
disagree
u'l learn more skill of how to DJ from vinyl than CDs then when ur ready transfer over, ok so not as cost effective but if its apassion and u love it you will do ur utmost to do it right and succeed
IF U GONNA DO IT DO IT PROBLY
DJ DECKS (VINYAL) ALL THE WAY FK CDJ;S
DO IT PROBLY !!!!!!!!!!!111
CD's first.
I bought my first set up in december last year. It was a kit from decks.co.uk. Couple of Numark Axis 4's and a DM1050, not brilliant but easy to get started on. I was contemplating buying a second hand vinyl set up earlier but looking back now I'm glad I saved up and waited that little bit longer so I could by a nice set-up to start on. Now I've been doing this DJ malarky for a few months and sort of got the basics I'm looking for a couple of turntables so i can learn to scratch so I can respect turntablists and DJ Heritage properly.
Basicially I'm saying I reckon CDJ's will be easier to start on.
DJ Doomz, Accept technology and learn to spell before you run your mouth.
Backwards.
I'm saving at the moment toward CDJs, with the hope of moving onto vinyl at a later date )and once i have the poppy to afford vinyl). With the possibilities offered by mp3s and downloads it just seems like the smartest move.
Still intend to learn the proper way someday.
short answer here is
short answer here is BOTH!
Depends on the gig - you may want / have to play vinyl or CD. Vinyl is still the best sound quality and feel bar none. But you cant beat CD's portability. and the Pioneer CDJs are like gold.
I still buy an amount of records each month (in part for collection purposes and the odd all vinyl gig) but most of the stuff i get on wax I also have on MP3 and vice versa.
numark
get yourself a pair of numark axis 4s - best value beginer decks

Or get yourself a Pacemaker
Or get yourself a Pacemaker and jump to the front of the technology queue altogether....
You've got a choice. CDJ's
You've got a choice. CDJ's will cost you more initial outlay but will be cheaper in the long run.
I definitely prefer vinyl but I can also see the benefits of cd mixing. Vinyl take more technical ability but if you're not interested in it why waste your time?
When you get your first car it's always a banger. When you move onto your second car you realise you don't need to do as much as in the old one cos it's all done for you. But you're still glad that you perfected your skills in the old one before moving on.
couldnt have said it better myself!!
reality detached hit the nail on the head, it is like getting ur 1st car... and you wouldnt go out and buy a porch would you?
honestly I know ur all saying cost effective and all that but if u truely have a passion for DJing and want to do it properly then get vinyl!! once u start on CD's u will never bother to learn vinyl and for me i think the art of DJing 1st lies with ur 1st bit of black, so warm, u can FEEL ur music and learn what it is to actually beatmatch!
then move onto CDJ's.
In my opinion
I suggest vinyl, simply because I think that DJ's who start off with vinyls end up having better skills...I find CDJ's a bit more "easy" to use and I don't think they'll help you with your abilities as a DJ
love vinyl, use cd, but the future is mp3's
vinyl is like a e-type jag, put it next to the latest ferrari and it is out dated in everyway. to get it to drive like the ferrari is near impossible.........but it has personality, and personality goes along long way. The more formats you can dj on the better. Start with the ol' decks for £50 is the right choice, its more rewarding than sitting behind a laptop. But if your playing out most venues are getting rid of there decks - the superclubs aint, but you aint gonna be playing there for a while.
